Culinary Czech Republic is, of course, dumplings - one of the most beloved and famous dishes. There is a common Czech joke that the inhabitants of this country can eat their favorite dish for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Dumplings are close relatives of Ukrainian dumplings, boiled in boiling water or steamed, they originated in the 19th century. In addition, both Austrians and Slovaks also claim that dumplings are their national achievement. It seems that it is not a unique dish, but if you try it, you will get a lot of pleasure, and even ask for supplements.

History of appearance

Appeared in the Czech Republic in the Middle Ages and were originally "food for the poor." Only at the end of the 18th century minced meat was added to this “bread”, and the dish became worthy of the table of the rich.

As an independent dish, they are rarely used. This is a good side dish for meat delights, especially if there is gravy.

Recipe

The number of products is optional. Sliced stale bread is soaked in milk (plain water). Then the soaked bread is kneaded with a fork into a homogeneous mass, mashed boiled cold potatoes, a raw egg are added, everything is thoroughly mixed and salted. Season to taste with your favorite spices: black pepper, cumin. If the mass is liquidish, then add flour and knead the dough.

Since the mass does not hold its shape, in the old days it was “packed” in a linen napkin and hung over boiling water at all 4 corners, thus obtaining the construction of a steam bath.

Modern housewives put the "semi-finished product" in a water bath and after boiling the water they keep it for about 30 minutes. The view will not seem very presentable to you, but it's all about taste - portioned pieces will become much more appetizing thanks to meat gravy.

Feed options

Recall: dumplings are a special steamed bread. They can decorate your table as an “independent” dish and as an excellent side dish. In the first case, the Czechs advise filling them with cottage cheese, fruits, berries. Flour dumplings are not necessarily sweet: the dough, flavored with salt and spices, can be stuffed with fried onions, meat or lard.

Are you visiting and have been given permission to soak the sauce with the last piece of dumpling? Well, that means you have the respect of the entire master's family. For a guest from the rank of "uninvited" in the Czech Republic will not be allowed to do this for anything.
