Stair lift. Electric stair lift: varieties. Advantages and disadvantages

Walkers for the disabled - an overview of the different types

The stairs are not a serious obstacle for a healthy person. But for someone who finds himself in, it is impossible to overcome this barrier without outside help, even if it is only a few steps away.

A step walker, or a mobile lift for the disabled, is one way to solve the problem of moving a person in a wheelchair up stairs.

Where there is no elevator, which includes a wheelchair, step walkers come to the rescue.

Device

A step walker is a mobile mechanical device with an electric drive and electronic control, designed to move a wheelchair with a disabled person sitting in it up and down flights of stairs.

The unit is powered by a rechargeable battery, some manufacturers measure the duration without recharging by the number of steps passed.

It is a rack, in the lower part of which there is a chassis (wheeled or caterpillar) with an engine and a battery, attachment points for the stroller, and in the upper part there are handles with control buttons displayed on them. There are also remote controlled stairs.

Classification of stairs

Types of step walkers, if possible, a disabled person can control the device:

  1. active;
  2. passive.

According to the principle of movement:

  • caterpillar;
  • walking.

A disabled person can use an active stair climber on his own: fix his wheelchair and, by controlling the lift using the remote control, go up or down the stairs.

Such lifts are not cheap and are not common in Russia. There is also a wheelchair with a built-in active type stair climber - this is the Observer Hybrid 2.0.

A passive mobile lift involves the participation of an attendant (operator).

After fixing the wheelchair with the disabled person on the lift, the operator guides the stepper, adjusting the speed of movement and the inclination of the stand for a smooth descent or ascent of the stairs.

Some skills are required to operate a stair climber - this process requires attention, coordination and strict adherence to safety rules when using the device.

Crawler lifts have a chassis made of tracks and small wheels. Caterpillars are made, as a rule, of rubber, which does not scratch or leave marks on the surface of steps and floors.

A caterpillar walker for the disabled has a smoother ride, but is also more cumbersome than a walking walker. The weight of the caterpillar stairway is from 55 to 100 kg. But it can be disassembled and folded to fit in the trunk of a car.

Walking stair models are equipped with a complex system of levers and wheels of different diameters with intelligent control. Their main advantage is lightness and compactness, they weigh less than 50 kg.

The advantage of walking stair walkers is their maneuverability

There are models that you can not detach from the stroller and move with them to the next obstacle.

Overview of popular stair models

Step walkers Observer and S-max

The Russian company Observer was created by Kaliningrader Roman Aranin after he became a wheelchair user after falling from a 30-meter height with a paraglider.

Observer develops its own models of high-tech electric wheelchairs for the disabled, and also sells and services on the Russian market rehabilitation aids for the disabled from other manufacturers, including the German S-max walking stair climbers.

The main model is S-max with SDM7 universal port. Compact, allows you to overcome including spiral staircases. Its weight is 31/32.7 kg. Load capacity 135/160 kg. Working width 72/77 cm.

Adjustable speed - 6-20 steps per minute. To prevent falling from the stairs, it has a mechanical blocking system for the movement of the device at the edge of the steps.

Vimec roby

Vimec roby step walkers (Italian brand with official representation in Russia) are caterpillar models of lifts. The two main models are the more compact T09 Roby Standart and the T09 ROBY PPP (Universal), suitable for use with a wide variety of strollers.

The weight of the models is 47 and 55 kg, respectively. The load capacity of both models is 130 kg, the speed is 5 m/min. Model T09 ROBY PPP (Universal) is equipped for greater safety with two ramps, along which the stroller drives in and out of the lift.

Scalamobi

Scalamobil stair climbers are made in Germany. The Scalamobil S35 is a wheelchair stair climber with technical characteristics comparable to the S-max stair climber as it is also a walking model. Lift weight - 25 kg.

Load capacity - 160 kg. The speed of movement on the stairs - 6-19 steps / min.

Suitable for both standard wheelchairs and baby strollers with a seat width of 26 cm.

The model is equipped with a sensor safety system that slows down the movement of the device at the edge of the step.

Benefits of stair climbers

The modern step walker is an easy-to-manage and easy-to-use "smart" mechanism.

The device solves a serious problem - it provides a safe and comfortable descent-ascent of the stairs for a wheelchair user where there are no other possibilities, such as an elevator, ramp or stationary lift.

Thus, this is an additional tool for creating a barrier-free environment and improving the opportunities and quality of life of people with disabilities.

For the use of mobile lifts, no additional devices are required.

They can be transported in the trunk of a car, they are easy to assemble, and one attendant is enough to use them. A plus is the possibility of autonomous operation with periodic recharging.

Conclusion

The quality of life of people with disabilities shows the level of development and awareness of society as a whole. Therefore, the creation of a barrier-free environment is declared as one of the priority areas in state policy.

And in the minds of more and more people, there is an understanding in relation to people with “expanded needs”.

Everyone knows that there are people with disabilities. The fact that they have some kind of problems is also out of the ear. A well-fed person is not a friend to a hungry person, and only those who are chained to it, or who have relatives with disabilities, can really understand how a person in a wheelchair really lives. In 2012, Russia ratified the document on the rights of persons with disabilities of the UN Convention.

According to the principles formulated in the UN document, the states participating in the Convention must implement the required measures to create equal access for persons with disabilities with healthy members of society to all facilities and services provided by the state to the population.

There are problems. What about solutions?

The Declaration of the UN Convention on the Protection and Ensuring the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is, of course, not the only document that the state uses in its social activities. At least some of the difficulties that people who have problems with the musculoskeletal system have to live with on a daily basis have quite acceptable solutions. To ensure the freedom of movement of a person in a wheelchair, all public buildings should now be designed with special ramps or devices for lifting a disabled person up stairs - stair lifts.

SNiP 35-01-2001 contains recommendations for designing an environment accessible to persons with disabilities. For public buildings being designed and under construction, these requirements are mandatory. But what about the old, already built and not equipped? Some structures, for example, architectural monuments, cannot be reconstructed in accordance with the requirements of SNiP 35-01-2001.

Crawler lift IDEAL X1 has a lower cost compared to analogues Roby T09, LG-2004, Sherpa 902.

It has unique advantages over similar devices:

  • Folding legs for reduced storage/transport dimensions
  • Removable headrest for strollers with its own headrest
  • Smooth adjustment of the speed of movement (analogues do not exist)
  • Smooth acceleration and braking without jerks (analogues do not exist)
  • Emergency button on the panel (does not require an additional connection cable)
  • The presence of a battery indicator on the steering wheel
  • Convenient steering wheel latch (for analogues it is very difficult to snap it off)
  • Less vibration during movement due to toothed pressure roller
  • Optimally designed frame design and requires less metal
  • Type of electric battery - LITHIUM-ION (Li - ion) - (optional, extended operating time of the caterpillar stair, without recharging) (analogues do not exist)

Alternative to ramps

In such cases, the solution to the problem will be a wheelchair stair lift - a device designed to lift a disabled person in a wheelchair up the stairs.

  1. Vertical lift. Vertical lifts are available without a shaft fence, designed for lifting no higher than two meters, and with a shaft fence, lifting to a height of up to 12.5 meters.
  2. Inclined stair lift for the disabled. Such lifts can be installed in buildings with wide stairs with the ability to turn around for the mechanism on the landing. The device is a platform that moves parallel to the slope of the stairs along the guides mounted on the stair railing. Depending on the model, the ascent is possible only for one march (inclined lifts INVAPROM A300, Vimec V64) or along a complex trajectory, repeating the spatial trajectory of the stairs - models INVAPROM A310, Vimec V65.

Installation of this type of lifts does not require complex reconstruction of the building, it is enough to fix the guides of the platform movement.

  1. Mobile caterpillar stair lifts for wheelchairs. Mobile lifting devices for wheelchairs further expand the possibilities of the low-mobility category of the population. The devices allow a wheelchair user to climb stairs almost anywhere: on narrow stairs in private homes, in buildings not equipped with ramps and fixed lifts, on city street and landscape stairs.

There is a fairly significant range of devices designed to expand the capabilities of a person in a wheelchair. According to the type of movement, they are divided into caterpillar lifts and step walkers.

Crawler devices are a platform with a crawler track that allows the wheelchair to move up and down safely. The device of the caterpillar of the elevator does not damage the coverings of the steps.

  • The T09 Roby has an electronically controlled drive that increases the reliability of the device. Regardless of the loading of the lift, the platform moves at a constant speed, without jerks and shocks. Wheelchair restraints are universal and fit most types of wheelchairs.
  • Omega-Starmax is a caterpillar stair lift equipped with a caterpillar self-braking drive with electromagnetic brakes. It is offered in various modifications: for passive disabled people traveling with accompanying persons and for active disabled people, with the possibility of self-attachment to a wheelchair and movement, including on flat areas. Simple and reliable operation makes it easy to use the device by people with fairly serious illnesses.

You can use Omega-Starmax not only indoors, the model is also great for overcoming uneven terrain, while maintaining stability and mobility on the snow cover.

  • Mobile stair lift SHERPA N 903 made in Italy. Moves on a caterpillar mechanism driven by an electric drive with convenient electronic control located in the handle.
  • Electric stair lift Puma UNI-130 is a stair climber. Allows you to overcome steps up to 200 mm high. The assistance of an attendant is required for use.

  1. Chair lifts. These devices are similar to inclined lifts, only designed to climb stairs for a person without a wheelchair. The most appropriate use in private homes. Different models allow you to use both on straight marches and on stairs of complex configuration, with rounded marches.

Results

You can get an idea of how wheelchair stair climbers work by looking at photos and videos, as well as reading reviews.

The use of lifts, both mobile and stationary, allows people with low mobility not to feel cut off from the rest of society, taking an active part in social life, doing art or work.

What are stair lifts for the disabled
To your attention an overview of stationary and mobile stair lifts for wheelchairs.

What is the best lift for the disabled on the stairs?

The lift for the disabled on the stairs is an indispensable attribute for public entrance groups. But, if you can save money on the street stairs and make a convenient ramp with your own hands, then indoors, especially at home, its mobile version will be indispensable. This mechanism is quite expensive, so before buying it is best to study the issue in detail so as not to get a "pig in a poke".

Mechanism types

Don't rush to buy. First you need to find out the type of its mechanism and the principle of operation. Today, there are only two varieties of such a device, based on hydraulics and electric drive. Let's take a closer look at both types.

Hydraulic

A similar mechanism for stairs works according to the laws of hydraulics.

Among the advantages can be noted:

  • independence of work from the presence of electricity,
  • the possibility of using it instead of a ladder, depending on the model,
  • smooth move,
  • simple installation that can be done at any level.

But, the hydraulic device for the disabled on the stairs is characterized by low speed and low load capacity. Therefore, these types are most used for lifting short distances, for example, to the height of one or more floors.

Electric

Products with electric drive are very popular due to their competitive advantages:

  • ability to lift heavy weights
  • fast pace and good traction,
  • availability,
  • ease of management.

But, it is dependent on electrical power. Therefore, when installing it, it is recommended to purchase a portable electrical substation to ensure the normal operation of the mechanism. After all, as you know, the uninterrupted supply of electricity has not yet been invented.

They are used not only in public places. They are also popular for arranging home stairs. There are special models with an electric drive that help people with disabilities move to a bath or pool.

For a comfortable fit in the car, electrical devices in the car were also invented.

What are the varieties

According to the conditions of use, their main types are distinguished.

Attention! Regardless of which lift is purchased, a guarantee is required for it, and a competent installer is included with it. Not only the life of the mechanism depends on the correct installation, but also the safety of the transported people. If you do not have special skills, then it is better to contact a professional for help in installation, no matter how simple the attached instructions may seem to you.

vertical

The vertical type can still be compared with an elevator. It simply lifts a person strictly vertically to the desired height. Such models are installed regardless of the stairs. As a rule, it is mounted next to it so that it is convenient to take the disabled person to the site of the required floor.

Such a staircase is relevant in public buildings. For home use, it is too bulky, and the price for it is not affordable for everyone.

Inclined types are gaining more and more popularity today. They provide smooth movement of a person directly on the steps. Such stairs with lifts are akin to escalators. You just load it up and drive to the desired stop. Such a device can be controlled both manually and automatically.

Of the amenities, a large carrying capacity can be noted. Of the shortcomings - large dimensions. If the width of the stairs is small, then the installation of such a lift is not possible, or the platform of the mechanism will occupy the entire width of the stairs, leaving no free space for the movement of other people.

Chair lifts

The chair lift is a kind of vertical mechanism, only a more “domesticated” type on a rack and pinion.

  • It can be installed on any ladder. A distinctive feature of such a lift is that you need to sit on it directly to a person, without a wheelchair.
  • This can be convenient for the elderly, or people with disabilities who are still able to move independently.
  • For disabled people of the first group, it will be not only problematic, but simply impossible to use such a miracle of technology.
  • Today, this type of lift is the most modernized. It has a control panel with an intuitive interface that anyone can understand. But, the installation of such a mechanism should be carried out only by professionals.

Mobile lifts

In places where it is not possible to install a stationary lift, mobile devices can be used. They will not lift a person to a great height, but they will become an excellent helper for taking a bath, transferring to a bed or chair, getting into a car, and in many other cases. Usually such devices have a hydraulic type of drive.

Crawler lifts

Caterpillar stair lift for the disabled is a type of mobile device.

  • Its design consists of a universal platform that is suitable for any type of wheelchair and a rubber caterpillar part that helps to move up stairs.
  • At the same time, this design is completely safe. It can be controlled both by the wheelchair user and by his immediate assistant.
  • Such models have a unique folding design, which only increases the convenience of their storage and transportation.
  • These lifts are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which retain their charge for a long time. The main thing is to recharge on time - and there will be no problems.
  • Also, the crawler lift does not require installation or any specialized maintenance. The mechanism itself is not complicated, and any man can handle its periodic maintenance. This lift is very convenient for city walks. After all, it will not be difficult to take it with you.

Undoubtedly, the most convenient device for people with disabilities is the caterpillar stair lift for the disabled.

Electric stair lift: varieties

It's no secret that dragging a load up the stairs is still a pleasure. It is for this reason that a stair lift is a very desirable thing for many. Such a device is useful primarily for those who often move heavy loads up the stairs, as well as for people with disabilities who are forced to move around in wheelchairs.

In this article, we will describe the most common types of electric lifting devices, as well as analyze their pros and cons.

For some, such a device is the only way to climb to the second floor.

Varieties of lifts

Devices for moving goods

Freight stair lifts used in industry and trade most often have the following design:

  • The basis of the device is a metal trolley with a platform on which the load is placed.
  • The trolley is equipped with either a pair of wheels with a large radius, or a special design of three pairs of wheels.

Six-wheel cart: the simplest device

  • Six-wheeled installations work solely due to the muscular strength of the loader, allowing you to overcome the steps by turning the three-wheeled units.
  • Two-wheeled vehicles are equipped with an electric motor, which greatly facilitates movement when moving up steep steps. The engine control panel is placed on the lift handle, and therefore the battery life is spent only on climbing the stairs.

Of course, it takes practice to master the skills of working with such a device, but a few tips from experienced craftsmen or a fairly detailed instruction will allow you to quickly cope with new information.

Photo of the electric model in operation

As for stationary ladder lifting platforms, they are rarely used to move goods. And this is fully justified, since it is easier to plan transportation in such a way as to go around the stairs than to install an expensive energy-intensive device.

Devices for people with disabilities

Photo of the lifting platform in the underpass

Despite the fact that devices for people forced to move with the help of wheelchairs are based on the same design solutions as industrial lifts, their classification is somewhat different.

The following groups of devices are distinguished:

  • Stationary fixtures.
  • Mobile devices.

Below we will devote a few words to each of these types:

  • Stationary lifts are installed directly on the stairs. Most often, they are equipped with transitions between floors in hospitals, sanatoriums and other similar institutions. Recently, legal requirements for the installation of stationary lifting devices for the disabled have also begun to apply to underground passages, railway stations, airports, etc.

Stationary chair-type device

  • The basis of the lift is a mechanism that ensures the movement of the supporting part along the guides fixed either on the steps or on the wall. A chair is used as a stationary element (then a person has to change into it, and an assistant has to transport the stroller) or a special platform.
  • In principle, a similar device for transporting a disabled person can be assembled with your own hands. The main task here is to ensure control of the rate of ascent / descent and a smooth ride.

Note!
The load capacity of most platform devices is quite sufficient to transport the most modern models of wheelchairs.

  • Mobile lifts are fixed directly on the stroller itself. Caterpillars equipped with protruding spikes are responsible for moving up the stairs for most models. Such models are convenient primarily because they allow a person to move to the upper floors in almost any building.

Stair lift T09 Roby on caterpillar tracks

  • An example of the most advanced device is the Vimec T09 Roby stair lift for the disabled. This device is compatible with most models of wheelchairs, and therefore is used almost all over the world.

Advice!
For the most efficient use of such a lift, it is desirable to have an accompanying person, but in some cases the disabled person himself can also move.

Naturally, there is no need to talk about the design, ease of operation and cost-effectiveness of such lifts. On the other hand, their main task is to increase the comfort of moving people with disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and devices of this type can cope with it quite well. Advantages and disadvantages

Summarizing, I would like to note the key advantages and disadvantages of electric stair lifts:

  • Significant facilitation of transportation of goods on the steps is a definite plus.
  • Modern models of lifting trolleys make it possible to move fragile items with minimal vibration, which minimizes the risk of damage during transportation.
  • There is nothing to say about the merits of devices for the disabled: without them, at least three physically strong assistants would be required to lift the wheelchair to the floor. If there is a lift, a disabled person can move between floors either by himself or with one accompanying person.

The disadvantages of this device are also obvious:

  • The main disadvantage is the high price. And if in the case of industrial models, the cost can be put up with, then in the case of devices for the disabled, acquisition often becomes an almost insoluble problem.
  • High complexity is another disadvantage. The electromechanical parts of these devices are quite "capricious" and require regular maintenance and care.
  • Stationary lifting platforms are bulky and very often make it difficult to fully operate the flight of stairs. (See also the article What are landings and flights of stairs)

Despite these shortcomings, electric lifts are in stable demand. Perhaps the reason for this is the almost complete absence of alternatives.

The stair lifts for the disabled and the electric industrial carts described in the article cannot be called essential items. However, their use makes it much easier to move up the steps, and in some cases it is worth spending money to purchase such a device. First of all, this concerns, of course, facilitating movement for persons with disabilities, but it will also not be superfluous to simplify the work of loaders.
