Parmelia usually grows on the trunks or branches of coniferous and deciduous trees, much less often on mossy soil, on stones, and almost never grows on bare wood. More common in the mountains and in the steppe zone. Parmelia has a weak ability to photosynthesize, but is highly resistant to adverse climatic conditions and air pollution, undemanding to the soil. It is found almost everywhere in the northern and southern hemispheres of the Earth. The greatest diversity and number of species is observed in the tropical zone.
