Instructions for use of Otofa ear drops is an important document that contains all the data regarding the rules and specifics of taking the drug. According to the annotation, the drug is characterized by a pronounced antibacterial effect.

Due to its composition, the drug is widely used in otolaryngological practice. When are drops of Otofa prescribed, and what is the specificity of their use.

Many patients, when they receive drops of Otofa in the appointment, are interested in whether this remedy is an antibiotic. Yes, Otof's ear drops belong to the category of drugs with antibacterial properties, which are based on a semi-synthetic component from the rifampicin group. The latter actively fights against mycobacteria, cocci, and in high concentrations, ear drops can even eliminate diseases caused by Proteus and E. coli.

Instructions for use Otof positions the drug as an effective tool in the fight against pathologies that develop as a result of the ingestion of strains that are resistant to other semi-synthetic antibiotics - penicillins and cephalosporins.

In addition, the indisputable advantage of drops is the simultaneous use of the drug with other antibiotics, due to which a higher and faster effect of therapy is achieved.

The composition of the drug, release form

The drug is available in liquid form in the form of an oily composition. The manufacturer of Otofa is the French pharmaceutical company Lab. Bouchard-Recordati.

Drops in the ears are packaged in bottles made of dark glass. The volume of the produced drug is 10 ml. The drops are red-yellow in color. The original bottle is supplemented with a special dropper-dispenser, which greatly simplifies the instillation procedure.

Otofa drops contain one single active substance - rifamycin. Its concentration in the preparation is 2.6 grams per 100 ml of the product, which corresponds to 2 million international units.

The following substances are present as auxiliary components in the drug:

  • macrogol 400;
  • ascorbic acid;
  • disodium edatate;
  • lithium hydroxide;
  • distilled water.

Due to this unique composition, the drug has a detrimental effect on a huge number of pathogenic microorganisms.

Mechanism of action

The medication is intended for external use. This causes the penetration of the active active substance only into the upper layers of the skin, located in the cavity of the auricle. In the affected areas of the skin, the Otofa drug reaches pathogenic cells, binds to their DNA and blocks the possibility of their further reproduction.

This mechanism of action of the drug prevents the progression of the disease, resulting in the death of pathogenic microorganisms and a gradual reduction in the brightness of the manifestation of the pathological process. Against this background, the symptoms of the disease become less pronounced and are gradually reduced to a minimum.

Indications for the use of Otofa

Otofa is a broad-spectrum drug. It finds its application in otolaryngology, entering the fight against many ENT diseases, which entailed complications in the form of inflammation of the ears.

Indications for the use of the drug are as follows:

  • otitis externa, accompanied by the development of the inflammatory process;
  • acute and subacute otitis media;
  • otitis, accompanied by perforation of the eardrum;
  • otitis media in a chronic form of development.

In addition, adults are often prescribed Otofa drops to prevent complications after surgical interventions on the middle ear.

Adults

If there are indications for the use of the drug, it can be used in patients of this age category. The drug is usually well tolerated by the body and does not cause adverse reactions. Of course, we are talking about a controlled intake, as prescribed by an otolaryngologist.

children

Otofa ear drops can also be prescribed to pediatric patients. Naturally, if there are no contraindications to their use. When determining the daily dosage and frequency of taking the medication, it is extremely important to take into account the age of the patient and the current state of his health. The development of side effects indicates that it is necessary to give up the drug extremely and pick up something more gentle.

Pregnant and during breastfeeding

The instructions for the use of Otofa drops do not contain any data confirming the safety of using the medication during the period of gestation and lactation. According to medical practice, Otofa can be prescribed by doctors to patients during pregnancy and lactation, if there are indications for its use. At the same time, throughout the course of treatment, the patient's condition should be strictly monitored by a doctor.

Drops are allowed to be taken in short courses. Moreover, it is allowed not to complete the entire course to the end - immediately after the stabilization of the patient's condition, the doctor must cancel the medication.

Attention! With perforation of the eardrum, the drug should be taken with extreme caution. Failure to comply with the doctor's instructions can provoke the development of complications and lead to partial or complete hearing loss.

Contraindications

According to ongoing clinical studies, Otofa ear drops are practically not absorbed into the tissues of the auricle. Therefore, cases of overdose have not been previously recorded. And the manufacturer himself claims that they are unlikely.

As such, there are no contraindications to the use of the drug. The only time when it becomes necessary to select another medication instead of Otofa is the patient's individual intolerance to the active ingredient or any of the additional substances that make up the medication.

But be that as it may, doctors still recommend that you first consult with specialists before taking the drug. Self-diagnosis and self-treatment can be very dangerous for the health of the patient. Only a qualified specialist can, on the basis of an examination and clinical studies, determine the etiology of the development of the inflammatory process and prescribe an appropriate therapy.

Method of application, dosage

As indicated in the instructions, Otofa is most often prescribed for otitis media. In addition, the drug is also shown in the fight against sulfuric plug - that is, using drops in the ear, it is possible to soften and carefully remove the hardened sulfuric exudate.

Attention! The information provided in the publication is for informational purposes only. It is not worth relying entirely on the indicated dosages. Only a qualified doctor should indicate in the appointment the frequency of taking the drug and the number of drops. It all depends solely on the disease and the specifics of its course.

The regimen and dosage of the drug is determined purely on an individual basis. The scheme and duration of treatment is indicated by the attending physician in relation to each individual patient. The medication is well tolerated, provided that the patient follows the prescriptions prescribed by the doctor.

Application by adults

According to the annotation, the optimal duration of the therapeutic course is 7-10 days. Before using the drug, the patient should consult a specialist. In some diseases of the ears, it is recommended to drip the medicine into the affected ear 2-3 times a day. Moreover, many doctors strongly advise to adhere to equal intervals between the use of the medication. The permissible single dose for patients of this age group is 5 drops. But, again, all this is purely individual.

Application to children

In pediatrics, it is allowed to use these ear drops for children. According to the guidelines for the use of the drug in childhood, they are prescribed according to the following treatment regimen - 3 drops three times a day. Moreover, the effectiveness of the drug is achieved only when the instillation procedure was carried out in accordance with all the rules: the drug is kept in the ear for 3-5 minutes, after which its remains are soaked with a napkin.

The maximum allowable course of therapeutic treatment with Otofa for children is 7 days. The manufacturer does not recommend exceeding the specified period of treatment, otherwise it is fraught with addiction to the drug and a violation of the internal microflora in the child's body.

Use by pregnant women and patients during lactation

According to the annotation and data of medical practice, the use of the drug during childbearing and breastfeeding is not limited to a reduced dosage. There is no need to reduce the dosage. In most cases, the drug can be used according to the regimen prescribed for adult patients.

But, despite the safety of Otofa drops indicated by the manufacturer during pregnancy and for breastfeeding women, the decision on the advisability of using the drug is determined by the attending physician on an individual basis.

The specifics of the instillation procedure

In order for the drug to have the highest possible effect, you need to know how to use it correctly.

Due to the fact that the manufacturer advises storing the bottle with the drug in the refrigerator, it is recommended to warm it up to a temperature of 35-36 ° C immediately before using the drops. The easiest way to do this is to hold the vial with the medicinal composition in your hand for 3-5 minutes. The fact is that the influence of a cold composition in otitis media and inflammation of the ears of various etiologies is unacceptable.

The cold composition can provoke the development of uncomfortable sensations in the cavity of the auditory organ. Moreover, in the case of regular use of an unheated drug, an aggravation of an already existing pathological process may develop.

Now with regard to the specifics of the instillation procedure itself. It consists in the sequential execution of the following actions:

  1. Before carrying out the procedure, it is advisable to wash your hands thoroughly. This will eliminate the risk of additional penetration of bacteria to the site of the inflammatory process.
  2. First you need to open the medicine bottle. To do this, just pull the foil tab and remove the packaging. Then we remove the cork and in its place we wind a dropper - a pipette, having previously freed it from the blister.
  3. After that, you need to clean the auricle. For this purpose, we use camphor oil or hydrogen peroxide. Through these means, it will be possible to soften the hardened dirt and delicately remove it from the ear canal.
  4. The patient should now be in the correct position. The patient lies on his side, the affected ear to the top.
  5. Drip the drug should be careful, because having an oily structure, it can stain clothes.
  6. After the procedure, the instilled ear is closed with a cotton swab moistened with petroleum jelly. This will prevent weathering of the medicinal composition. In the supine position, the patient should be after the procedure for another 3-5 minutes. Due to this, the medicine is better distributed over the damaged ear tissues. After the specified time, the cotton wool is removed from the ear, and the remnants of the medication are removed with a napkin.

This is the specificity of using Otofa drops. If there is a need to remove the sulfuric plug, then the drug is dripped in a few drops until the sulfuric exudate is completely softened and leaves the ear cavity.

Side effects

According to the manufacturer, Otofa drops are practically not absorbed, so side effects from taking the drug are extremely rare. In most cases, the drug is well tolerated.

Among the side effects indicated by the manufacturer are the following:

  • hypersensitivity to the components of the drug;
  • allergic reaction - itching, burning, redness, rash.

If any adverse reaction uncharacteristic of taking Otofa ear drops occurs, it is recommended to consult a doctor. In such cases, most often, the specialist decides to replace the drug with a drug similar in medicinal properties.

As stipulated in the annotation, the drops are intended for external use only. When ingested, they can cause the following reaction:

  • nausea;
  • vomit;
  • dizziness;
  • violation of the chair;
  • flatulence;
  • malaise.

If the drug has entered the body, then you should immediately do a gastric lavage and take enterosorbents. If the patient's condition worsens, it is necessary to seek help from a medical institution.

If drops of Otof get into the eyes, it is necessary to quickly rinse the mucous membrane under a stream of running warm water.

drug interaction

There is no information on the compatibility of Otofa drops with other drugs in the instructions for use. And, despite this, otolaryngologists do not recommend taking any other drops in the ears at the same time along with the use of Otofa.

If other drugs were prescribed by the doctor, then it is advisable to maintain a break between taking medications for at least 30 minutes. In addition, if the patient is already taking any medications, the doctor must be made aware of this. Perhaps it is other medicines that are not compatible with Otofa, which is fraught with aggravation of the patient's health.

Alcohol compatibility

According to clinical studies, the use of alcoholic beverages is not a ban on the use of Otofa drops. But at the same time, experts do not advise combining the medicine used to eliminate the inflammatory process, along with alcohol.

Ethyl alcohol has a negative effect on the functioning of the immune system, thereby reducing the body's natural protective barrier against pathogenic and pathogenic microorganisms. Therefore, it is possible that therapy with Otofa drops will not give the expected positive effect when combined with alcohol.

In addition, it is necessary to take into account the fact that antibiotics, which include Otof drops, even in small doses, have a detrimental effect on human internal organs, and ethyl alcohol, being the base of all alcoholic beverages, exacerbates this destructive effect. As a result of combining Otofa drops, serious diseases of the liver, kidneys, heart and gastrointestinal tract can develop. There may also be side reactions that are not listed in the annotation.

Terms and conditions of storage

The instructions for the use of Otofa drops indicate that the duration of the drug is 3 years. But we are talking about a closed package and an unopened bottle. The shelf life after opening the bottle will be 30 days. Moreover, in order for the drug to retain all its medicinal properties during the period specified by the manufacturer, it is necessary to adhere to the storage conditions of the drug:

  • the drug is stored in a refrigerator or in a dark place at a temperature not exceeding 25 ° C;
  • the place for storing the medication should be inaccessible to children and pets.

Drug analogues

The drug Otofa, used in otolaryngological practice as a medicine against the development of inflammatory diseases of the outer and middle ear, has a fairly large amount of analogues both in terms of its medicinal effect on pathology and in composition.

The main advantage of Otofa drops in comparison with other means of identical medical effects lies in its high degree of safety of use, due to which the medication can be used in the treatment of perforation of the eardrum.

In terms of composition, Otof has a number of analogues that are inferior or superior to the original to one degree or another. The main point of replacing the original is that patients should take into account the fact that it is possible to replace a medicine prescribed by a specialist with an analogue only after a second consultation. Self-medication can cause significant damage to the health of the patient.

Despite the fact that the original medication costs about 190 rubles on average, many patients still try to find cheaper analogues of Otof. The most direct analogue of this medicine is a medicine called Rifogal, but its cost is practically the same as Otof's drops. Moreover, in some pharmacies Rifogal is even more expensive than the original.

If we talk about more accessible analogues, then according to the therapeutic properties of Otofa drops, it is possible to replace them with such drugs:

  • Normax;
  • Tsipromed;
  • Conjuctin.

Among the more expensive analogues of the Otofa medication are such medicines:

  1. Otipax. A drug with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. However, in the presence of a fungal-type infection, it will not be able to provide an effective therapeutic effect. It is most often used as a local anesthetic for ear pain caused by inflammation of the upper respiratory tract.
  2. Oticaine. It is characterized by a combined action. Due to its unique composition, the drug is used to treat otitis media of various etiologies in both adults and children. The main advantage of Otikain drops is a multidirectional action, which consists in simultaneous pain relief and removal of the inflammatory process. The drug does not have a systemic effect on the patient's body. It is not allowed to the pier if there is a violation of the integrity of the eardrum.
  3. Sofradex. It is used for the treatment of ophthalmic and otolaryngological diseases. It has a pronounced antipruritic effect. Due to its composition, it prevents the development of the inflammatory process, and also provides local anesthesia. Like Otofa, Sofradex is not prohibited in pediatrics, and can also be prescribed to pregnant and lactating mothers. Dosage, frequency of administration and course of treatment is determined purely on an individual basis.
  4. Oftamirin. Like the previous version, Oftamirin is used to treat ophthalmic and otolaryngological diseases. Actively manifests itself in the fight against a wide range of bacteria. It is allowed to be taken by children from 5 years old, pregnant and lactating mothers, since its active substances are practically not absorbed into the tissues and are completely eliminated from the body.

Outcome

Summarizing all of the above, we will make a small conclusion:

  1. Drops of Otofa is a drug intended for the treatment of otitis media and other infectious and inflammatory diseases in the area of ENT organs.
  2. In most cases, the medication is used to eliminate the inflammatory process in external and otitis media. Less often - to remove the sulfur plug.
  3. A distinctive feature of Otofa drops is the fact that they are allowed to be used in the presence of perforation / perforation / trauma of the eardrum. In turn, most of the drugs of a similar medicinal effect are not allowed for use if there are any violations of the integrity of the eardrum.
  4. The drug is approved for use by both adults and young children, but as a short-term therapy, since long-term use can cause addiction of pathogenic microorganisms to the active substance. According to the same principle, Otofa is prescribed for pregnant women. What is also a significant advantage of the drug over other drugs.
  5. Otofa is prescribed by an otolaryngologist. And only a doctor can indicate the dosage, frequency of administration and course of treatment with the drug. It all depends on the specifics of the course of the disease, on the individual characteristics of each patient, as well as on his age category. Self-medication is dangerous to health and can cause the development of irreversible negative consequences for the patient's health.

Take care of your health and take care of yourself!

Various otolaryngological problems (diseases of the ears, throat and nose) cause great inconvenience to a person, cause pain and disrupt the normal rhythm of life.

Unfortunately, they are very common, especially during the off-season periods.

Both adults and children are susceptible to them. Effective in the treatment of a number of ENT diseases is a medical preparation in the form of Otofa ear drops.

Indications for use

This medication is prescribed as an antibacterial agent in the treatment of suppuration of the eardrum after damage, after operations on the middle ear (to prevent the development of infection), with external and otitis media, which is dangerous with serious complications.

This disease causes inflammation of the so-called middle ear, located just behind the eardrum, between the ear canal and the inner ear.

There are acute and chronic otitis media. With untimely treatment, there is a high probability of a serious complication, namely hearing loss (decrease in auditory perception). Normal hearing may not return to an ill person throughout life.

There are several the main causes of this disease:

  1. Infection penetration.
  2. Injury to any part of the ear.
  3. Spread of inflammation through the nasopharynx into the middle ear.

Prescribe conservative methods of treatment, in addition to antibacterial agents, anti-inflammatory drugs are used, as well as drugs that contribute to the overall strengthening of immunity.

In order to prevent the development of a chronic form of otitis media, as well as to avoid complications, you need to know the main symptoms of the disease, which include the following:

  • "shooting" pain in the ear, may increase and decrease during the day;
  • autophony - a phenomenon in which the ear is stuffed up, the sounds seem indistinct, and in silence a deaf continuous noise is heard;
  • possible hearing loss, feeling of weakness, high temperature.

While adults can quickly recognize these symptoms and take action, time is often lost in treating children. If the baby is not even a year old, he will not be able to make it clear what is happening to him.

You need to be alert for continuous crying, fever, loss of appetite. Crying can sharply intensify at the time of "lumbago".

Apply the drug by instillation of the solution into the ear canal. First you need it to reach room temperature, for this you can intensively roll the bottle between your palms.

Otherwise, in addition to unpleasant sensations from the ingress of cold liquid, inflammation may increase.

It is best to lie on your side, and after instilling the medicine, lie down in this position for several minutes so that the drug does not leak out. Do the same with the second ear.

Another way is possible: pour a small amount of the drug into the ear canal, hold for no more than 3 minutes. Change ear. Get up, wipe off the rest with a napkin.

In stationary conditions, Otofu is used to wash the internal ear organs, using a special device for this - a cannula. Usually this method is used for severe forms, as well as for purulent complications.

Optimal course- no more than 7 days. If used for longer periods, effectiveness may be reduced.

The dosage depends on the age of the patient, from 12 years and older - up to 5 drops at a time, 3 times a day. For young children - no more than 3 drops at a time, 2 or 3 times a day, as directed by a physician.

Be careful when treating babies under one year old, do not insert a pipette into the ear canal, the child may twitch sharply and the membrane will be damaged.

The composition of the drug and the form of release

For 100 ml of solution there are:

  • 2.6 g of sodium rifamycin - the main active ingredient;
  • ascorbic acid, macrogol, sulfites, sodium edetate, potassium disulfide, lithium hydroxide, purified water - perform auxiliary functions.

The solution is clear, from yellow to red. Container 10 ml, dark glass, for the convenience of instillation, the bottles are equipped with a pipette.

pharmachologic effect

It is a bactericidal drug with a wide spectrum of action. The rifamycin included in its composition is active against most pathogens, namely:

  • staphylococci;
  • gonococci;
  • streptococci;
  • pneumococci;
  • tuberculosis microbacteria;
  • escherichia;
  • proteas.

The RNA of the bacterial cell binds to rifamycin, a stable complex is formed, as a result of which its growth is suppressed. Inflammation subsides, pain subsides.

Interaction with other medicines

As part of clinical studies, the interaction of OTOFA with other medicines has not been established, but it is better to avoid combined use with analogues and medicines for other purposes, in order to exclude unidentified reactions.

Side effects

The main side reaction may be irritation and redness of the area around the ear canal and inside it, itching, rash, swelling appear.

Allergic reactions to rifamycin and sulfur compounds are possible. Rarely reported.

Contraindications

An absolute contraindication is individual intolerance to the components of the drug. In this case, treatment should be stopped immediately.

A relative contraindication is pregnancy and lactation, since no deep research has been conducted in this area.

Special instructions:

  1. If the dosage is not observed, resistance of bacterial strains to rifamycin may appear.
  2. After treatment with Otofa, it is possible to stain the eardrum pink, but this is noticeable only when examined by a doctor.
  3. Care must be taken when instilling, orange stains remain on the tissue, which are difficult to remove.
  4. There was no effect on the ability to drive a car.

Storage conditions and terms

It is necessary to store the drug in a cool place, the temperature above 25 ° is unacceptable. If the bottle has not been opened, the shelf life is 3 years.

After violation of the tightness of the cork - no more than 6 months.

Price

The highest cost of the drug in Russia noted when buying through an online pharmacy, about 650 rubles. In retail pharmacies, the price varies within a small range, from about 180 to 210 rubles.

In Ukraine- from 78 UAH. up to 130 UAH, depending on the city.

Analogues

There are no complete analogues of this drug, there are only:

  • Similar in composition is a solution for injection Rifogal. The active substance in it is also rifamycin.
  • Drops that have a similar effect - Ribomunil, Knoxprey, Sofradex, Iodinol, Unazine, Oftamirin, Galazolin, Otinum, Boric acid, Rhinorus spray and a number of others. These medicines do not contain antibiotics, unlike Otofa.

You should not change the drug prescribed by the doctor to its analogue on your own, you can not only delay recovery, but also cause irreparable harm!

Do not use any folk methods, including warming and heating, which can lead to a sharp deterioration, as the inflammatory process will intensify.

Today, various diseases of the ENT organs have become more frequent, which bring a lot of inconvenience to the patient, because pain occurs and the usual rhythm of life is disturbed. They are diagnosed in both children and adults. The treatment of the disease has an integrated approach, since it is important not only to get rid of the symptoms, but also to stop the cause of the pathological process. Otofa remains one of the most effective drugs. According to the instructions for use, these are ear drops, with which it is possible to relieve swelling, inflammation and pain.

Indications for the use of Otofa ear drops

Instructions for use

Otofa drops are used by instilling them into the ear canal. Before this, the solution must be warmed to room temperature. This is very easy to do if you place the bottle between your palms and rub. If this is not done, then when instilled, unpleasant sensations may occur, which will only increase the inflammatory process.

Before dripping ear drops, the patient should lie on his side, and after instillation, remain in this position for several minutes. This will keep the medicine from leaking out of the ear. Perform similar actions with the other ear.

There is another option for using Otofa drops. It is necessary to pour a small amount of medication into the ear canal, wait 3 minutes. Change the ear, stand up and remove the remnants with a tissue.

In a hospital, Otofu is used to wash the internal ear organs. For these purposes, a special device is used - a cannula. As a rule, this method of therapy is prescribed in the treatment of severe otitis media or with a purulent complication. The duration of therapy will be a week. If you use the drug for a longer time, then addiction occurs, and this reduces the effectiveness of therapy.

For adult patients and children from 12 years old, drip 5 drops 3 times a day. For younger patients - 3 drops once a day. The indicated dosage can be adjusted by the attending physician, taking into account the severity of the disease.
