Appearance
The player is packaged in a small transparent plastic box. It is dense, and after unpacking it can fit for some little things. Behind the transparent cover is the player.
We would not call the design of the novelty frankly sporty, but there are light notes reminiscent of this. Available in 5 color options - red, white, black, blue and light pink. Externally, we really liked the player, and not least due to the combination of screen and appearance.
The display in the player is OLED, single color, resolution 128*64, very clear and bright. True, in the sun it fades very much and you have to cover it with your hand so that something can be seen. Viewing angles are, of course, maximum on all four sides - all thanks to the above-mentioned OLED technology. It is not covered by anything, but is slightly recessed into the body. This will protect it from some kind of impact, but you should be careful not to put the player in pockets with piercing and cutting objects.
U5 is very light and small in size, like a lighter, so the eyelet for the lanyard, available on back wall, it will come in handy - the U5 model has the right place on the neck. Also included is a clip that attaches to the case. Thanks to her, the player can be fastened to clothing. Of course, such an accessory is not suitable for any clothing, but it is quite suitable for sportswear.
The main manipulations when moving through the menu are performed using a four-way key, inside which there is another largest one. It is slightly recessed relative to the rocker button ringing it, so when you press "Up", "Down", "Left", "Right" the central button does not touch.
The player is turned on with a button located on the bottom.
And on the right side we see a cap, under which an ordinary USB plug is hidden, which is directly inserted into the socket, without using any cables.
It would be nice if there was some kind of extension cable in the kit, because in laptops the sockets are often located one above the other, and the player enters them very tightly if the second socket is occupied by some other device or cable. The cap is very tightly fastened, so it will never fall off by itself.
In the box, in addition to the player, there are also headphones - standard, rather mediocre-sounding, but they are suitable for unpretentious people.
Menu, control
The player is turned on by long pressing the corresponding button. After the download process (which lasts quite a long time - about 7 seconds), the function is activated, during which the player was turned off.

When switching between them, a small animation is played. The player responds very cheerfully to button presses, there are no delays, and this is very pleasing.
The U5 is a pleasure to operate, thanks to the mechanical buttons and well-thought-out menu layout, of course. This player is very similar to its predecessor, U4, almost like two drops of water, but how much more convenient are ordinary buttons than sensors! You can calmly control the volume and switch tracks, holding the player in your pocket, without being afraid to accidentally touch the "unnecessary" sensor. And the blocking, which is set / removed simply by pressing a button, and not by moving the slider, can also be set without taking the player out of your pocket.
Music player
Samsung U5, contrary to expectations, turned out to be quite voracious on formats: it supports MP3, WMA, as well as the less common OGG and the lossless FLAC compression format. It is rather unusual for such a small child to see support for this format - usually this is the prerogative of multimedia "combines".
Music is organized into a library, but the ability to navigate through folders has not been canceled. The items in the library are: Now Playing, Artist, Albums, Songs, Genres, Playlists, Recorded Files, Music Browser. The penultimate item opens a list of files recorded from the radio and voice recorder. 
The screen during playback displays the current time, playback mode, equalizer mode, battery charge, the scrolling line is “Folder name / File name”, if the display of tags is turned off, or “Song name / Album name / Artist name”, if in the settings next to the word "Tag" is "On". As with the U4, to the right of the tag information is the album art. Yes, yes, the screen is one-color, small, but even then you can see what is drawn on the cover, if you remember what the original looks like.
Unfortunately, like the U4, the U5 lacks a context menu, and all settings, including the equalizer mode and playback, are set from the general "Settings" menu. It's not very convenient, but small good news yet there is: the button, which is located on right side rocker on the upper end, can be configured to change the equalizer mode, playback speed, playback mode, or activate the so-called "Learning Mode".

The last one named, "Learning Mode", is the following. When activated, the music continues to play, but the control scheme changes. When you press a custom button, you can loop a section of the track, pressing the right / left rewind the track for 10 seconds forward / backward, and pressing up / down change the playback speed. Of course, all these "chips" were invented not only to laugh with friends at the distorted voices and looped "ekaniyas" of your favorite artists, but also to study foreign languages by audio courses.
In the settings menu, you can adjust the equalizer. There are 6 preset modes, as well as the ability to create one custom. The setup mode is divided into two parts: the first allows you to use an ordinary (by the way, seven-band) equalizer, the second is designed to enable proprietary "improvers" called DNSe. The U5 has a "lite" version of this system, which allows you to control the "3d" and "Bass" functions. The latter, it should be noted, is quite nice in work, gives the sound a pleasant color, but the thing is not for everybody.
In the audio player settings, you can enable / disable the display of tags, as well as change the duration of the skip interval when pressing the left / right buttons. By default, of course, when you press these buttons, the previous / next track is turned on, but you can make it so that intervals of 5, 10, 30 seconds, or 1 minute are skipped.

For audiobook lovers
Those who like to listen to audiobooks with the help of a player will hardly like U5. The player does not know how to bookmark audio files - this is the main drawback. When playing in directory mode, playback after playing the last file from the directory either stops or starts playing the same folder from the beginning (depending on the settings). There is no mode in which playback would be transferred to the next directory. But not everything is very bad - the player supports playlists, which can be created using the proprietary EmoDio. There is another "plus" - progressive rewind. I didn’t really like its implementation specifically in U5: it accelerates for a long time, and maximum speed not very large, therefore, when rewinding very long files, you will have to be patient.

This is the second "chip" of this player after the design, which speaks of its sportiness. It consists in this. You choose your weight, the number of calories you want to burn, then set the duration of the session, the type of exercise - walking, slow running, fast running, walking, etc., you can set the music playback mode - to sequential or random, and then proceed to training, and when the time runs out, the player will notify you about it. After that, you can view information about the last 30 workouts, which will indicate the date, duration, as well as the percentage of the required norm that you completed. This feature is quite interesting, it can be useful for business or just for fun.

The built-in microphone allows you to use the Samsung U5 player as a voice recorder. Recording is done directly to MP3 format with a bit rate of 128 kbps and a sampling rate of 24 kHz, which is rather stingy, but in simple cases, when you need to record, for example, a dialogue in a quiet room, this is enough. In places where loud and bass sounds are recorded, rattling begins. You can pause while recording. There are no more possibilities.

Of the features of this function, we can note the support for RDS information, but only in European firmware. Just like in the case of the music player, there is no context menu, all settings are made from the general menu. You can specify the region (the list also includes Japanese, where the range starts from 76 MHz), change the sensitivity, turn on the automatic tuning mode. The first 30 stations will be memorized. You can record from the radio. Its quality is not adjustable, as in the case of a voice recorder - 128 kbps (what frequency?).
PC connection
Depending on the settings, the player is detected by the computer either as an ordinary removable disk or as an MTP device. In any case, it is available from the EmoDio proprietary program, the main features of which are outlined here. But if the program is not to your liking, then, fortunately, no one is forcing you to use it. The speed when copying data to memory is approximately 2.5-3 MB / s, which is average and quite good option for a player with a memory capacity of 2 or 4 GB.
Battery
The player is powered, of course, from the built-in battery, and charging is carried out from the USB port of the computer. Despite the relative diminutiveness, the operating time on a single charge is quite decent. The manufacturer's website states that the U5 can last up to 20 hours without recharging while playing music. In our testing, it played several MP3, WMA, and FLAC albums circling, at 30 out of 40 volume levels, and lasted about 18 hours. It should be noted that the testing took place on a relatively new, not "swinged" battery, which passed only two charge / discharge cycles. But it is already clear that you can count on the player to honestly work out the declared operating time, and the OLED screen does not consume so much energy.
Prices
The price of this device, of course, will depend on the amount of built-in memory. And it can be either 2 or 4 GB. For a budget player, in principle, it will be enough, although at present this will not seem enough to many. So, for this model in Moscow, relevant at the time you read this article, are as follows:

The player may be of interest not only to those who are looking for a companion for sports, but also to people who need a simple, practical and inexpensive player. This device, in our opinion, is one of the most convenient players of this form factor. At the same time, no marketing cunning intentions have deprived us of either a radio with the ability to record or a voice recorder. It turned out to be a standard, very convenient player, which even FLAC can play. If you need a player of this type, the U5 is a very worthy choice.
