Spray Aqua Maris® is an isotonic solution (that is, it is ideal for the body, since the concentration of salt in it corresponds to its level in human blood plasma), and a convenient dispenser provides optimal irrigation and moisturizing of local areas of the nasal mucosa, without intensive washing. Therefore, it can be used every day, especially during outbreaks of colds.
The nasal mucosa is designed in such a way as to constantly filter the inhaled air. Sea water must be diluted, because in its “natural” state it has an excessively high concentration of salts. Aqua Maris drops are a legendary drug that laid the foundation for the culture of using sea water for medicinal purposes. The drug is used to treat and prevent the common cold of various etiologies, pharyngitis, gingivitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis and other ENT pathologies of the nasopharynx and oral cavity. The drug helps to increase the immunity of the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx.
Aqua Maris is a colorless and odorless solution. The medicinal product is packaged in transparent polyethylene dropper bottles with a volume of 10 ml. The branded cardboard pack contains one bottle of medicine, an insert leaflet with a detailed description.
The composition of 100 ml of solution includes:
- 30 ml of sterile water of the Adriatic Sea (Adriatic);
- 70 ml of purified water (auxiliary component).

Pharmacological properties
The composition of the water of the Adriatic Sea includes a whole range of useful trace elements and minerals:
- Calcium and magnesium take part in vital processes. They provide constant movement of ciliated cells. Due to their intense activity, the nasal mucosa is self-cleansing. As a result, pathogenic microorganisms do not have time to settle on it, which reduces the risk of developing the disease.
- Zinc and selenium improve immunity at the local level by stimulating it. The membranes of the nasopharynx and paranasal sinuses begin to fight intensely with bacteria and viruses that come from outside.
- Iodine and sodium chloride activate the function of special cells that humidify the inhaled air. In addition, these components have a beneficial effect on the mucous membrane. They destroy pathogens, eliminate inflammation, activate the excretion of mucus. Iodine also acts as an antiseptic.
There is no systemic absorption with topical application of drops. The composition of Aqua Maris does not contain dyes and other aggressive substances, which allows the use of the drug for the treatment of children from the first day of life.
Indications, contraindications
Nasal drops for children Aqua Maris are used in the following cases:
- inflammatory pathologies of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx of an acute / chronic nature (rhinitis, sinusitis, frontal sinusitis, ethmoiditis, etc.);
- neurovegetative or allergic vasomotor rhinitis - respiratory failure through the nose due to narrowing of the nasal cavity, due to impaired vascular tone in the mucous membrane;
- dryness of the nasal mucosa (for intensive moisturizing);
- adenoids - a pathological increase (hypertrophy) of the nasopharyngeal tonsil, causing difficulty in nasal breathing;
- after nasal surgery.
A solution of sea water is also used during pregnancy. Its main task is to prevent influenza and colds in women during the period of bearing a child.
The only direct contraindication is high sensitivity to at least one component of the drug. It usually manifests itself in the form of an allergy.
Possible side effects
Allergic manifestations are possible adverse reactions that occur in children while using Aqua Maris drops. The child may be concerned about:
- paroxysmal sneezing;
- itching, burning, swelling in the nasal cavity;
- discharge from the nose of the mucous secretion;
- difficult nasal breathing.
Cases of using the drug in a dosage exceeding the therapeutic norm have not been registered.
Method of application, dosage regimen
The standard scheme for using Aqua Maris drops for newborns is indicated in the instructions for use. For treatment, 2 drops are instilled into each nasal passage up to 4 times a day. 1-2 drops will be required to prevent the development of a runny nose. In this case, instillation is carried out 2-3 times a day. For the purposes of nasal hygiene, instillation is carried out as long as necessary (until the polluting parts are completely softened and removed from the nasal cavity).
The duration of therapy for babies is determined by the pediatrician. Usually the course lasts no more than 4 weeks. For nasal hygiene, the following rules should be followed:
- the cleansing procedure is best done in the morning, when the baby has just woken up;
- washing is carried out in the prone position of the baby;
- softened crusts (five minutes after instillation) are carefully removed with a cotton turunda;
- the procedure is repeated if the crusts could not be completely removed.
Before you start using Aqua Maris drops, you must carefully study the instructions, which indicate the following additional recommendations:
- It is allowed to use Aqua Maris drops with other topical nasal medicines at the same time.
- To avoid the development of otitis media in infants, they need to instill the solution carefully, with minimal pressure on the dropper bottle.
- From pharmacies, nasal drops for children are dispensed without a prescription. Despite this, it is recommended to consult a specialist before use.
- During pregnancy, Aqua Maris is allowed to use.
Negative interactions of Aqua Maris with other drugs have not been recorded.
Additional Information
The shelf life of Aqua Maris nasal drops for children is 2 years from the date of manufacture. After opening, the medicinal solution is suitable for use within 45 days. It is strictly forbidden to apply after the expiration date.
