Summer is in full swing and you can’t let a minute, or even a day, go by without taking a picture of something. No matter how you come up with a photo adventure and go on it. Today we will try, briefly, to look at thematic areas, which you can use when developing a summer photo project for yourself.

Summer photo projects in nature

Like every season, summer is distinguished by several basic principles. Summer is, first of all, the predominance of warm, one might even say hot, colors in the surrounding nature. As a rule, the summer period is when you have the opportunity to travel outside the city, where a larger field opens up for photographic searches.

The Importance of the Foreground in Photography

In order to make your photo more convincing compositionally, you need to build the composition in such a way that you have a convincing foreground in the foreground. The presence of a foreground will allow you to build a relationship between depth and scale in the photo. The foreground will direct the viewer's eye away from the large object in the foreground and deeper into the image, giving him an idea of the scale of the landscape being shown. To define the foreground, you can use any objects, both natural (mountains, stones, branches) and man-made (wall, fence, etc.).

The lines in the frame that you catch in the surrounding nature are one of the ideal composition tools. Natural lines focus viewers' attention and direct eye movements. For example, if your photo shows converging lines, it could be a road, or a river, or railroad tracks, your viewer will definitely draw their eyes to the point where these lines converge. Diagonal lines are considered ideal in a composition, especially those directed from the lower left corner to the upper right corner.

Mood in photography

It is natural for any photographer to find in every moment and in every frame its own unique, special character, special mood. Works that manage to preserve the drama, internal history, beauty and peculiarity of the landscape, works that convey the atmosphere are considered the best representatives of the genre. In order for you to get a characteristic landscape, you need to go shoot it on a cloudy, cloudy day. After all, a bright sky and clear sun are not the best companions when looking for a landscape mood. Rather, the mood and character of the landscape must be sought in haze, fog, storm clouds, everything that allows light and shadow to play in your lens.

Sky in photography

You can try experimenting with plants. Play with angle, color, look for the sun. You can try taking a photo with an interesting plant pattern in black and white.

Like any other time of year, summer has its own characteristics. We have already said that summer is often a vacation period when people devote all their attention to relaxation, themselves and what they love most. To begin with, if you are a novice photo hunter, you can take the camera on your own vacation and start with photographs of your own friends, but immediately try to capture characteristic meaningful photographs, and not just click everything.

You can, before starting your trip (shooting), agree with your friends that your photographs will tell some kind of your story, and they will gladly agree to help you with this.

As you gain experience, it will be easier for you to capture interesting moments, both in urban genre photography and in documentary landscape photographs.

Summer photo projects in the city

If you still don’t manage to go out of town and you spend the whole summer in the city, don’t despair. The city is a great place to find ideas for your photographs and photography projects.

Urban still life

Let's start small. You can devote a single weekend to searching for this urban still life and, believe me, it is a very exciting activity. Still life, translated from French, means “dead nature.” Using this qualitative definition, you can hunt for all the “inanimate” urban nature - these could be monuments, park benches, fountains. All this can be viewed through the lens from different angles, in different time days, under different lighting conditions. You can also stroll through the markets or along the streets where free artists are located.

Old houses are the perfect place for hunting photos. And old houses will always look advantageous and interesting. You don't have to be a super professional photographer to take some very good black and white photographs of one of the oldest houses you can find in your city. It's all about the houses themselves. Each house absorbs the history and destinies of its residents, and these stories are reflected on the walls, windows, and doors. Windows look very interesting separately or entrance doors, landings.

The cityscape is generally very interesting. There is always a mass unique opportunities to search for new forms, new angles, new compositional and stylistic solutions. And even if you are photographing the most popular architectural object in your city, you always have a chance to take “that” photograph.

We have already repeatedly talked about documentary photographs and photo projects, and yet we will once again focus on people and the street. The street - in general - the best place to search for stories, interesting footage and fresh ideas. There will always be people the best models in photography, because the original purpose of photography is to reflect a person’s life, and the person himself is the best reflection of himself.

So take a trip through the streets of your hometown and take pictures of people.

In the summer you can also go on a visit and turn this visit into a photo hunt. The most important thing is to look for something interesting and unusual. Expand your circle of perception. For example, ask to visit some friend of a friend who is doing something interesting. Everyone has one artist or musician in reserve. Ask to visit this artist or musician, and spend a few hours with him, photographing him doing his work. Let this musician or artist of yours not pay any attention to you and your camera, then the photo shoot will be as successful as possible and the photographs will turn out to be relaxed and open.

There's still more than a month left until the end of summer. Imagine more than thirty opportunities to create an interesting summer photography project. Everything is in your hands, the main thing is that they have a camera. We believe that you will get an interesting summer photo story, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s about outdoor recreation or about summer city life. And we will be happy to talk about your projects in our next articles. We are waiting for your summer photo projects.
