One of the brightest and most popular British bands of the 80s - 90s, Wet Wet Wet will remain in the memory of the international army of music lovers, first of all, as the creators of the hit “Love is All Around”. The song was first performed in the famous English film “Four Weddings and a Funeral” starring Hugh Grant. But besides her, Wet Wet Wet had many more big hits.

Wet Wet Wet is the fruit of the childhood passion for music of four school friends who were born and raised in Scotland. The first and last team composition included:

Thanks to one of these demo tapes, in 1985 Wet Wet Wet were able to sign a contract with the Phonogram Records record label. Veteran producer Willie Mitchell began working with the debutants. The first recordings took place in Memphis. The debut single “Wishing I Was Lucky”, released in 1987, confirming its name, really brought success to the group, rising to the British Top 10 (the highest achievement is line 6 of the chart). The second single “Sweet Little Mystery” was even more successful, reaching Top 5.

It is clear with what impatience the fans of the newly-minted group were waiting for the debut album. The LP “Popped in Souled out” was not slow in appearing to the great delight of soul fans, who guaranteed it a high start on the album chart right from the second line followed by first place. The album spawned several more popular hit singles - “Angel Eyes (Home and Away)” and “Temptation”. And its total circulation worldwide has exceeded 2.2 million copies.

The very first steps towards glory also brought the first major troubles. The famous Irish singer and composer Van Morrison sued the musicians for using his words in the song “Sweet Little Mystery”. Fortunately for Wet Wet Wet, Morrison agreed to settle the case amicably, avoiding legal red tape.

Literally a year later, the group members decided to make public the relatively old material, which were combined under one cover on their second album “The Memphis Sessions”. The team initially considered the songs recorded in the second half of the 80s even before work on the debut “Popped in Souled Out” to be unworthy of publication. Their largely innocuous cover of the Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends" became the band's first UK number one and turned Wet Wet Wet into '80s pop idols.

In 1989, the quartet released a new studio recording, “Holding Back the River,” which was destined to repeat the success of the debut album. This work marked the beginning of a new stage in the group's work - a turn from pop-soul to pure pop music, gravitating towards blues rhythms. The disc was less fortunate with unambiguous hits. “Sweet Surrender” was a fairly strong composition, three more singles - “Broke Away”, “Hold Back the River” and “Stay with Me Heartache” - went almost unnoticed.

In the late 80s and early 90s, the Scots, striking while the iron was hot, staged several UK and world tours. They were especially loved by pop fans in Europe. During one of their tours they opened Elton John's shows.

Their reputation as one of the leading British bands was incredibly strengthened in 1992, when the new hit single “Goodnight Girl” appeared, which easily managed not only to rise to the top of the English chart, but also to remain in the lead for several weeks in a row. The single preceded the release of the studio album High on the Happy Side (1992), a very confident effort that included a number of songs that received excellent radio play.

Wet Wet Wet owed such success to the public to their charm, the sincere performance of vocalist Marty Pellow, and simply the undoubted talent of the musicians. At the same time, the team sought not to stand still, but to explore new directions and keep up with changing fashion. The single “Lip Service,” released in the summer of 1992, demonstrated an interest in dance-oriented music. If there were skeptics who predicted the team nothing but disappointments along the way, they had to take their words back when Wet Wet Wet recorded the hit single “Love Is All Around” from the 1994 hit movie “Four Weddings and a Funeral.” This cover version of the Troggs song, interpreted by the Scots, stayed at the top of the English chart for 15 weeks in a row - something no other British group has ever achieved before or since. In the wake of such excitement, a compilation of the best songs, symbolically named “End of Part One,” was in great demand on the European market.

By 1995, the Scots had become the most sought-after and popular team in Great Britain. They are recording a new studio long-play “Picture This” (which, however, did not please fans with unambiguous hit singles) and go on a promotional tour. The next long-play “Julia Says” (1996) easily rose to Top 10. But from then on, the group’s luck seemed to change, their new works no longer achieved the same success, and interest in the work of the Scots gradually faded away. In 1997, celebrating the tenth anniversary of their generally successful career, Wet Wet Wet released a disc simply titled "10." For this work, the foursome teamed up for the first time with the famous tandem of composers Graham Lyle and Terry Britten, who wrote for Tina Turner, Pink Floyd, and Michael Jackson.

After the album's release, drummer Tommy Cunningham left the band. Soon he began appearing in public with his new band, Sleeping Giants. The future of Wet Wet Wet remained in doubt.
